YOUNG QUILTERS PROJECT

During the summer holidays I worked with some children at my local community centre to produce a wall hanging for the centre.  I thought that you may like to try the same idea that we used.

We started by everyone drawing a face or a pattern with hands onto a sheet of A4 paper and, using felt tip pens, coloured in the design.

I then took these home and using the copier photocopied the design onto fabric.  If you have a copier that uses a pigment ink [Epsom is called dura-brite ink] all you have to do is wash a piece of white cotton fabric, iron on a A4 sheet of freezer paper, cut to size and then enclose the edge that will go first through the printer with masking tape.  If the printer is not very happy with this try just cutting off the corners of the paper, this often helps.  Failing that, instead of freezer paper, use an A4 sticky label.  If you do not have a pigment ink printer you can buy fabric already prepared for ordinary ink [Miracle fabric sheets; EQ Printables or PhotoFabric are three I know], but don’t get the paper designed for Tee shirts, that is plastic.

At the next session these were put in the middle of a larger sheet of fabric and we added crazy patchwork round the edge.

Finally these were all joined together to make one large piece of work. It looks fantastic!

Why don’t you use this idea and print some photos onto the fabric and make really personalised gifts for Christmas?  One thing I have done is take photos of my friend’s house, printed them onto fabric, then made them into place mats. Another time I used some holiday pictures printed onto fabric to make a cushion.

Just one point, please ask before you put fabric through your parent’s printer!
